Using Cellphones in class

Student Information

At the start of 2021, we will be reintroducing our systems around student use of cellphones. This is to ensure students are focussed on their learning in the classroom without the distractions of cellphones, and that teachers do not have to monitor inappropriate use of cellphones. We hope that you will see the benefits of this new system and work with us.

Year 9 & 10

  • Cellphones will be collected at the start of each day and returned at the end of the day

Year 11 – 13

  • Cellphones will be OFF AND AWAY during class time and Ako Time
  • Students may use their cellphone ONLY if their teacher gives permission because it is related to teaching and learning
  • Students are responsible for ensuring their cellphone is off and away, and any headphones are removed, before they enter the classroom
  • Off and away means the cellphone is not to be used or visible during class time and Ako Time
  • Students may use your cellphone between classes, interval and lunchtime

If there are issues with student cellphone use, a range of options may be applied:

  • Students may receive a callback – lunchtime or after school
  • The cellphone may be confiscated. It will not be returned until our normal confiscation-return day of Wednesday or Friday or a parent may be required to uplift the cellphone
  • Student internet access privileges at school may be removed
  • Repeated issues will see more serious consequences put in place.

So, how will it work?

Year 9 & 10

  • Cellphones will be collected from students during Period 1 if it is a core class. If Period 1 is an option class, cellphones will be collected during Ako Time
  • Cellphones will be placed in individual, named plastic bags, in a container for the Ako Class, and stored securely in the office
  • Cellphones will be returned to students during Period 5 if it is a core class. If Period 5 is an option class, students will be required to go to designated places in the school (eg Office, Deans area) to uplift their cellphone.

Year 11 - 13

  • Cellphones will be OFF AND AWAY during class time and Ako Time.
  • Students may use their cellphone ONLY if their teacher gives them permission because it is related to teaching and learning
  • Students are responsible for ensuring their cellphone is off and away, and any headphones are removed, before they enter the classroom
  • Off and away means the cellphone is not to be used or visible during class time and Ako Time for any reason
  • Students may use their cellphone between classes, interval and lunchtime, before and after school
