Statement regarding serious assault at Upper Hutt College

Kia ora koutou

There has been a lot of interest, discussion and speculation regarding the serious assault that took place on the school grounds at lunchtime on Thursday 8 February. This includes comment on appropriate consequences for the assault.

In response to those outside of our school community who have questions, I have attached below, the email that was sent home to parents and caregivers of our students, on Friday 9 February.

In terms of the consequences, we are required to follow Ministry processes around serious behaviour issues, but the school’s response will recognise the serious nature of the assault and if the students are suspended they will face a Board disciplinary hearing later this week.

Finally, we should all remember that at the centre of this situation is a victim, a young girl. The ongoing interest in what happened draws attention to her, and the seeking, and repeated sharing, of footage of the fight - including by adults who should know better - simply continues to victimise the victim.

If you wish to pass on your best wishes to her and her family, I am happy to do this. If you want to know what we are doing to keep our students safe, I can tell you that too. If you are interested in what the rest of the school has been doing in the first week of school, please see our Facebook page.
