Correcting and Updating Information - Monday 17 August 2020

Email sent to parents and caregivers, Sunday 16 August 2020

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers

This email is to inform you of a situation that has developed at school over the weekend and to provide you with correct and relevant information from the school.

From Wednesday 5 August – Saturday 8 August, our GEO301 (Year 13 Geography classes) students and teachers were in Rotorua as part of their Tourism studies. While there, they visited Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland on Friday 7 August and may have had limited contact with someone who has been diagnosed with novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

We only became aware of this situation on Saturday and have worked as quickly as possible over the weekend to get advice and guidance from health authorities and to ensure the students and their families are kept well-informed.

Health authorities have stated that these students are considered a ‘casual contact’, having been face-to-face with the person with COVID-19 for less than 15 minutes or in the same closed space for less than 2 hours. They are very unlikely to get infected and are considered to be at low risk of catching the virus.

All families of these students have been given the relevant health advice on what to do and are following that - I am aware that a number of students have already had COVID-19 tests or have appointments to do so. The teachers involved will also be getting a COVID-19 test.

There is no cause for alarm for others at the school, but if you are concerned, you are advised to speak with your GP or contact the free Healthline service on 0900 358 5453, 24 hours a day. For further information, visit the COVID-19 website at

We will continue to work with the health authorities, following and conveying their advice and guidance in this situation.

Thanks for your ongoing support.
