VISUAL ART
Head of Department: Willie Telfer
Introduction
At all levels the Art programme
places emphasis on learning and developing the basic skills, techniques and
processes of: -
-
Drawing (as a core activity - for all visual Art subjects)
- Design
- Painting
- Photography
These studies are based on examples
from both tradition and contemporary artist models. Students at all levels of
artistic experience are accommodated with the expectation that their
performance will improve with mindful practice of the skills needed and a purposeful
attitude to work completion. The main focus is to develop a practical and
informed interest in the visual arts with the intention of encouraging students
to develop skills to the best of their ability.
"Have I got what it takes?"
With the right attitude anyone can
make artworks. It basically involves applying core art principles to different
situations, media and processes. With practice and mindfulness, most art skills
can be developed and creative products produced. It is sometimes very hard work
but it is also fun and personally rewarding.
Painting
Painting is an option offered at
levels 1, 2 and 3. It involves
developing both practical and thinking skills as a way of developing your
picture making skills using a range of drawing and painting media. There is an extensive use of artist models to
inform your creativity.
Design
Design is an option offered at
levels 2 and 3. It involves designing a
range of products using both traditional and digital processes. Students are encouraged to learn from artist
models, popular culture and working to both given and self-generated briefs.
Photography -
Is an exciting art option that is
offered at Years 12 and 13. If you are interested in a creative medium which
does not involve traditional drawing and painting, then this could be the
option for you. We will be using digital
cameras to capture images and computer software to manipulate the resulting
pictures.
