Welcome
Kia Ora and Welcome to Upper Hutt College!
Upper Hutt College is a New Zealand high school surrounded by nature on the edge of the capital.
Upper Hutt has a beautiful setting, nestled between the crystal clear waters of the Hutt River and the tree covered hills of the Rimutakas. It is little wonder that Peter Jackson chose this area for the peaceful Rivendell scenes in his Lord of the Rings films.
Enjoy the best of both worlds. At Upper Hutt College you can experience both the cosmopolitan capital city of Wellington with its cafes, shopping, art galleries and museums and at the same time the beautiful river and forest scenery of the Upper Hutt valley. You can live close to nature on the edge of the capital. We are just 20 minutes drive away from the centre of Wellington. Regular train and bus services give you easy access to the city centre.
There are many sporting and cultural activities. We have very strong fencing and dragon boating teams. There are several golf clubs near the school and it is possible to join hockey and other sporting teams or to go horse riding in the local area. The river is great for swimming and fishing.
Maori culture is strong and celebrated at Upper Hutt College. There is a marae (traditional Maori meeting house) on the school grounds. All students are welcome to join the very active Maori culture group and to learn some traditional Maori song and dance in the kapa haka group.
Of course Upper Hutt College offers all the academic subjects that you expect to find at any New Zealand school. In addition, we offer Drama, Media Studies, Art, Photography and Hospitality & Catering classes. Outdoor Education is also a very popular option. We can also help organise a 10 day sailing trip on the Spirit of Adventure ship, where a crew of 20 students learn how to sail and also learn social and leadership skills.
Friendly homestay families welcome you as part of their family. Families choose to live in the Wellington suburb of Upper Hutt because they can relax in the peaceful calm of nature on the edge or our beautiful capital city.
Come and share that experience with us.
