The college has a Careers Department, based upstairs (mezzanine floor) in the library. Mr Frank Ching works part time as Careers Adviser, and Mrs Esther Loader works part time also as Careers Assistant. The phone extension for contact is 757 or you can email chingf@upperhutt.school.nz.
NOTICES
1. Important dates for Year 13 students:
i) Auckland University Liaison. Done - 22 students attended!
ii) Canterbury University Liaison at UHC Tuesday 16th March at 1:30pm in the Pavilion.
iii) Victoria University liaison at UHC Wednesday 17th March at 2:15pm in the Pavilion.
iv) Otago University liaison at UHC (now changed to) Thursday 6th March at 1:30pm in the Pavilion.
. Otago University also has an Information Evening geared towards potential students and their parents/guardians scheduled for Thursday 20th May. (more details to come)
These are opportunities for students to get insight into the courses and possibilities at these universities. It is good to get in knowledge about the range of possibilities so as to be able to make an informed decision.
2. Work Choice day is Tuesday May 18th. Some year 12 students will be invited to participate in this day which involves visiting 1 or 2 workplaces. An excellent opportunity to learn about the workplace. Some great times have been had in the past when students have been able to venture into work situations that many of us have not experienced.
3. Some year 9 students will have the opportunity to experience the Inzone Careers bus when it visits on Wednesday May 19th. This features video displays covering a range of Training places and other Industries as well as Motivational presentations.
4. Looking ahead to the evening of Wednesday 11th August we will have our Careers Evening. There will be a wide range of Training and Industry information sessions available for all students, along with their parents /guardians, to experience.
5. Interested in Navy or Air Force ?
Navy:
A. Any high achieving Yr 12 and 13 students with a strong interest in the Navy should consider the Navy Adventure Challenge. This gives students insight into career opportunities within the Navy and is run 4 times during the year. Interested students should register their interest at the Careers Office (on the mezzanine floor of the library)
B. Navy liaison people will be visiting the school on Wednesday 4th August at 2:15pm. All students with an interest in the Navy would do well to attend that meeting
Air Force: Students who are keen on a career in the RNZAF should consider the Air Force Challenge which runs in the first week of the July school holidays. Students should register their interest in this at the Careers Office in the school Library.
